While I do believe that 'the sin' is "self reign at the encouragement of the serpent", I also believe that '<em>the</em> sin' is the root "sin" of any and all other sins as well. "The sin" is what I believe Paul is talking about, not just sin or sins. And, I believe you correctly identified this "the sin" by saying it is that "which is simply the exchange of the reign of God in the heart for self-reign, as proposed by the serpent….," In the first sentence of Romans 6 Paul asks ths question we all should answer, "Are we to continue in "the" sin ....? and then in verse 12, "...do not let "the" sin reign in your mortal body..." It's always been about "who reigns?"! If we reign, then "the" sin reigns. If He reigns, then we are living "the" life of Another just like He said He did when He told Phillip, "Have I been with you all this time and you still don't know me?
